Our Fight for Freedom

~ Carol Dixon

Sometimes lessons take a long time to

be learned. For many years now our

country has suffered internally from

apathy and from those who put personal

preferences above a larger goal of

helping our country continue on a path

that offers equality and justice for all, compassion and caring, reverence for this beautiful Earth that gives us life, and respect for our friends around the world. Too many get so involved in their own struggles and lives that they forget to look at the bigger picture.

At this point our country is in very serious trouble because all of the values that this country was built on (and improved on over many years of struggles) are being so quickly eroded and destroyed that it's hard to keep up. I quote that I saw and have treasured says, “Democracy is not a spectator sport”. This country was founded on citizen participation and that's the only way we can keep it moving in a positive direction. After the original Constitutional convention Benjamin Franklin was asked, “What have we got, a republic or a monarchy?” He replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.” He understood that to have a democratic republic it wouldn't be just a right, but a serious responsibility for the citizens of this new country to participate. It took many years for all people in this country to legally be able to vote. Voting is a serious responsibility and duty if we want to defend freedom and justice. Speaking out is also required, and also a duty. Those we elect are responsible for making laws, but we are responsible for making sure that the laws support freedom and equality and justice for all. If an elected official fails to support those basic concepts then they should be replaced, and that's done by voting. We, the citizens, are the watchdogs of our democratic republic and of our freedom and our future. Too many fell into apathy and the feeling that participation was a right, but not a responsibility. And now we find our country in chaos and have lost respect of our allies all over the world.

Thankfully, many people seem to be emerging from the wave of apathy. Young people are realizing that they have to fight to create their future and are running for office, starting their own news reporting of actual facts and not propaganda, and voting. Recent special elections are showing that people are finally realizing it's up to us to turn this around and get on a path that creates a positive future for our citizens, for our Earth, and for the world. When we look back in history we see this kind of participation consistently in Indigenous cultures. Everyone not only has input, but takes that as a serious duty to keep on the right path.

If our experiment in democracy is to succeed, we all need to understand that it's up to us. There has been so much defeatism and sadness that our country is in a downward spiral, that too many forgot how powerful we can be when we accept our duty and speak out and turn out to vote and support those who represent the finest ideals we have had instead of those who place personal power and greed over what is best for everyone in our country, for the importance of strong like minded allies and friends, and for the Earth that gives us life.

A meditation I created that I use daily is:

May the spirit of oneness ignite in as many humans as possible, so we can rise above the chaos and division we have created and work together to heal the hurts, to right the wrongs, to fix what we have broken, and to heal and protect our planet and to create a sustainable future where we treat each other and all life with kindness and compassion and respect.

We need to accept responsibility and find joy and togetherness in the fight to preserve a future that we can be proud of leaving to our children and for our planet. We need to be spiritual warriors who don't give up, but who continue to fight for what is right in a peaceful way that inspires others to do the same. We can do this if we all accept our responsibility and work together for a better future.
