Gerrymandering in America

~ Ron Leith

There has always been a vicious ebb and

flow in the political war between the mainstream

white man and the common black man.

From their first contact, it has always been a

conflict of superior vs inferior according to the white man’s judgment of equality. In this, according to the white man, there was no equality.

The white man always considered himself to be superior.

And when the common black man called for an equal opportunity, the white man always denied him at every turn.

In over 500 years, this has not changed.

There have been periods of slow and painful progress toward equality for the black man, but that has come with serious consequences.

As an Indigenous man, I have a vested interest in the well-being of the black man, as he has become family and neighbor.

One of the issues has been the right to vote. As American Indians, we were not allowed to vote until 1925 with the passing of the American Indian Citizenship Act. We understand the effects of political marginalization.

Southern states are leading the charge in gerrymandering efforts, which will undermine and disparage the minority vote in upcoming elections.

Donald Trump initiated the gerrymandering wars with his directive to Texas in order to bolster the Republican hold on state congressional seats. Texas readily complied, even though this is typically done during the national census years. Texas successfully re-drew the congressional districts and eliminated minority electoral opportunities for success.

In Joyce Meyers's May 16, 2026, Substack article, “The Redistricting Race to the Bottom,” she outlines the efforts in a state-by-state review.

Joyce points out that these efforts are purely racial in nature, and they are a Republican movement to maintain and possibly expand political power.

Nationally, the Republican Party has become exceedingly loathsome and unpopular.  Their allegiance to Donald Trump and his failures has driven a large portion of the public to stop and reevaluate their priorities. Many Republicans are now vowing to vote Democrat up and down the ballot for the first time in history. This possibility is absolutely frightening to the party leadership.

So, moving the “goalpost” through a national gerrymandering effort is their attempt to “stack the deck” politically for the 2026/2028 elections. In six months, we shall see the results.
