Flash Fiction
~Dawn Karima
A birthday gift for Duane Brayboy
1.In the release, there are four of us.
Yet, we are wolves, so we are
always one.
2. Only fools and prey believe that all of our howls sound the same.
3. Waya, the real human beings say. We answer. We would never tell them our real names anyway.
4. Four of us are released into our Carolina homelands. A Tuscarora Elder gives us each a new name. Our Waya Elder gives him a new name, too.
5. We have no word for I. Strangers label us a pack. We consider ourselves a tribe.
6.Nocturnal only counts on New Year's Eve.
7. Dragging Canoe. Abiaki. Tsali. We know them all. We sang their honor songs.
8. Extinct does not mean we are gone from the Earth. Instead, it means that only our spirits remain.
9. Never have we ever been the enemies of bison, bears or big cats. Dividing the top of the chain is a colonizer's game.
10. As long as the rivers flow and the grass grows is a proverb or a phrase, but never a promise.
11. When we howl, we will come and save you. This we know for sure.
