~ Dawn Karima
In the beginning of days, animals could talk.
They still can talk, but most humans can no
longer understand them. Yet, in the early
eras, animals understood one another and
humans could comprehend their animal
relatives' speech. Heaven and Earth were full of many kinds of animals.
A giant toad lived in the Heavens. One day, the giant toad became extremely hungry. He looked around and saw the shining sunlight. When he felt the heat of the sun, the giant toad decided that the sun seemed hot and spicy. He would eat the sun!
The giant toad swallowed the sun! As he ate the sun, the Earth transformed into utter darkness. Slowly, the sun rumbled in the tummy of the giant toad. The sunlight was crackling with heat and upset the giant toad's stomach and digestion! So, the toad expelled the sun!
Light returned to the Earth. The sun shone just as brightly as it did before the toad ate it. Mvskoke tribal members call this time of darkness HVRESSE HVSE TEYOPOSKAT (huh-thlee-see/huh-ze/te-yo-bose-kaht).
English speakers label this phenomenon in the sky as an eclipse. The Elders told this story one night in Wewoka, Oklahoma.
