Our Mother Has a Heartbeat
~ Carol Dixon

I have felt the heartbeat of our Mother Earth since

I was young. Indigenous cultures are all aware of it.

And science has now verified it, even though

scientists look for only physical reasons it happens.

This is a brief summary of the science of it from

the internet:

“The Earth has a subtle, rhythmic seismic pulse, or "microseism," that repeats approximately every 26 seconds, a phenomenon that has been recorded since the 1960s. While this "heartbeat" is too faint to be felt by humans, scientists have pinpointed its origin to a specific location in the Gulf of Guinea but have not yet agreed on a definitive cause for it. The intelligence of humans has far exceeded our wisdom for centuries now. The mind is an amazing thing and capable of so much. But as our intelligence has grown, our wisdom has not been able to keep up. So decisions made by humanity are way too often convenient in the short term, and highly destructive in the long term, because we are into immediate gratification and not the sustainable health of this beautiful Earth that supports us and all of life. There was a film made years back by the 13th Alaska Native Corporation (the one that represents Alaska Natives who have moved out of Alaska). It was called “More Than Bows and Arrows” and it was emphasizing how many aspects of Indigenous cultures have actually been incorporated into our modern society. Unfortunately, in my opinion, most of these things are superficial. Names of places is a good example. It's great to do that, but Indigenous cultures have much more than that to offer, and that offering is needed in today's world more than ever.

The strong connection both physically and spiritually to our Mother Earth is the most important. This comes from Indigenous cultures all over the world. It's what helps us and all life survive and thrive, and it's a mutual agreement that accepts the myriad of blessings from our Earth with the promise and lifestyle that continues to respect and nurture our Earth so those blessings can continue. There are pockets of people all over the world who still understand this and who are doing all they can. But it isn't enough, given the rapid rate of destruction that we cause. People are concerned with so many different things. But the truth is that if we don't return as a whole species to respecting this beautiful, living planet that feeds us, and nurtures us, none of those other things will matter. We were gifted an amazing living planet, and we have responded as a whole over way too many years like ungrateful children who have no respect or understanding of how fragile this relationship is.

For all of these reasons, it's more necessary than ever that we not only have our own personal relationship to the land and our Earth, but that we actively advocate constantly in any way we can to help others realize the truth of our existence and return to working with our Mother Earth instead of destroying her for immediate gratification. All those who understand this know that now is the time we must stand strong and use whatever tools we have individually to help awaken all of the sleepers so we can ensure a future for all life.
